St Mirren send 'best wishes' to Richard Tait as former defender announces retirement

Former Saints defender Richard Tait is hanging up his boots for good after confirming his retirement.

The 33-year-old missed the majority of last season after suffering a groin injury which required surgery in November.

The ex-Motherwell man did make one last appearance in the stripes in the final game of the season against Rangers as a late substitute.

But Tait took to social media to explain that would be his last ever professional appearance as he prepares for a new challenge.

Tait said: “Some of you may already know, but for those who don’t I have decided to retire from professional football.

“It of course has been a very big decision for me, but I’ve been thinking about it a lot over the past year.

“I’d like to thank every club I’ve had the pleasure of representing and big thanks goes out to all the lads I’ve had the pleasure of sharing a dressing room with.

“I hope when you think about me as a team-mate you can say I was 100 per cent all in and left it all out on the pitch, regardless if I was good that day or s***e.

“To my family and friends, I appreciate all the support and countless trips to near and far places. It means the world to me that you guys came along for the ride!”

Tait made nearly 90 appearances in total for the Buddies after making the move from Fir Park, notching three goals including a memorable winner against Ross County early last season.

A St Mirren spokesperson said: “Our best wishes to Richard Tait following the announcement of his retirement.

“In his three seasons at Saints, Taity made 87 appearances and scored three goals.”
