Sri Lanka Condemns Israel's Attack On UN Peacekeepers In Lebanon

White phosphorus fired by Israeli army to create a smoke screen on the Israel-Lebanon border

Sri Lanka's foreign ministry has issued a strong condemnation of Israel's recent attack on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon. The incident occurred at the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) headquarters in the city of Naqoura, resulting in injuries to two Sri Lankan soldiers.

The Israel Defense Forces have acknowledged the attack on the UNIFIL base and stated that they were responding to an immediate threat against their soldiers. However, the circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation.

UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix has expressed serious concern over the escalating situation in southern Lebanon, emphasizing that UN peacekeepers are facing significant risks in the region.

Lieutenant General Sean Clancy of Ireland's armed forces has raised suspicions that the Israeli fire targeting the UN peacekeeping position may have been deliberate, given the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This recent attack is the second incident this week where Israeli tank fire has resulted in injuries to UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. Just a day prior, two Indonesian peacekeepers were hospitalized following a similar incident.
