Sports Illustrated Swimsuit under fire after picking Kim Kardashian as cover model

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit has come under fire after announcing that Kim Kardashian was one of the four cover models for the 2022 edition.

The billionaire entrepreneur, 41, will be joined alongside singer Ciara, 36, Maye Musk, 74 - mother of Tesla founder Elon - and 36-year-old plus-size model Yumi Nu.

The four women were selected "to headline one of the most diverse issues in the magazine’s history", according to editor-in-chief MJ Day.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit posted a silhouetted photo of the Keeping Up With The Kardashian star as a tease on Monday afternoon but, despite the businesswoman's acumen and 311 million Instagram followers, the magazine's fans were not impressed.

One user wrote: "This is embarrassing. After all you've been working towards to show regular day to day women who are incredible.. this is what you do? Yikes."

Another commented: "KimK is the exact opposite of a naturally beautiful woman. She encourages disordered eating and photoshop because she hates herself. Booo."

A third added: "To the young girls who are looking at this cover. You do not need plastic surgery to be beautiful! Ignore the cover. There are plenty of inspiring women inside the magazine to look up to being themselves."

The mogul was photographed in the Dominican Republic for the shoot and was wearing one of her nude SKIMS bikinis, while in another image she is wearing a silver half-length zipper one piece with green gloves as she handled a motorbike in the forest.

Ciara was photographed in Barbados for her shoot, Musk's photo shoot was in Belize and Nu was strutting her bikini-clad images in Montenegro.

One person who was happy about the selection of the cover models was Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson, who has been married to Ciara since July 2016.

Posting a photo of his wife in one of the cover shots, the American football player wrote to his 5.4m Instagram followers: "You are not only the most beautiful woman in the world, but your heart, your kindness, your love for others, your ability to make the world dance, your a big time CEO, an incredible wife and mother! You Inspire me! There is nothing you can't do!"

The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit magazine will be available from Thursday, May 19.
