Stenhousemuir captain Gregor Buchanan helped fire his side to the top of the William Hill Championship table after he scored late in the second half of their 2-0 victory at Queen’s Park.
Euan O’Reilly chipped Jack Wills after a great run to open the scoring four minutes into the second half, and Buchanan thumped a finish past the Spiders goalkeeper with six minutes remaining.
It was their fifth goal of the new season, enough to see them climb above Raith Rovers and Partick Thistle who are also on seven points, but with a positive goal difference of three to Stenhousemuir’s four.
Queen’s Park remain at the bottom of the table following their third straight defeat. Anton Dowds’ double inside seven first-half minutes was enough for Raith to beat 10-man Ayr 2-0.
The visitors went down to 10 men after just five minutes when Leon King was dismissed with a straight red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity.
Dowds opened the scoring in the eighth minute, then bagged his brace in the 15th. Morton were dealt a third straight defeat after Thomas O’Brien nodded home in second-half stoppage time to secure Arbroath a 2-1 win.
