South Park: Release date and teaser for new TV film The Streaming Wars announced

All aboard the train to South Park: another TV film is on the way, and it looks to be more meta than ever.

Called South Park: The Streaming Wars, the film has been given a release date of June 1 on Paramount+ and is the third in a 14-film deal between ViacomCBS and South Park’s creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

In a description by The Hollywood Reporter, things look to get interesting: “Cartman locks horns with his mom in a battle of wills, while an epic conflict unfolds and threatens South Park’s very existence.”

Though the description doesn’t tease any more information, the trailer itself shows an angry Cartman crying in the living room next to his mother, who certainly doesn’t look impressed by his antics.

South Park is well known for its tongue-in-cheek commentary on social events. First airing in 1997, the show has gone onto win Emmys for its portrayal of the lives of Colorado kids Cartman, Kenny, Stan and Kyle – as well as their friends and family – in the town of South Park.

The show’s first two made-for-TV films were called Post Covid and The Return of Covid, which aired in November and December and focussed on the impact of the pandemic – and what time travel might be able to do for the children who lived through lockdown.

In addition to the marathon, multi-million dollar streaming deal (reportedly worth a cool $900m), South Park has also been continuing its dominance of the regular airwaves, with its 25th season recently wrapping on Comedy Central.

To celebrate, the show itself also recently announced a special 25th anniversary concert featuring “25 years of the music of South Park”.

Happening on August 10 at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, it’s set to be attended by the show’s creators, Parker and Stone, and will feature special performances from Primus and Ween.
