In June 2026, a Southern California drive-thru in Wildomar, Riverside County, became the center of a lawsuit against Starbucks that put the company’s safety policies and procedures under scrutiny. Leota Walker says she accepted a coffee cup from a Starbucks employee, but when she tried to place it safely inside her vehicle’s cup holder, the cup suddenly buckled, causing the lid to pop off.
Now, Walker’s lawyers say the containment failure sent boiling-hot liquid onto her lap. The volume and intense temperature of the liquid allegedly caused severe physical trauma that altered her life forever. Walker suffered second-degree burns to her stomach, inner thighs and private parts. Photos of the injuries have since been posted on Instagram by various media outlets.
