The Steelers are expected to finalize a deal with Teryl Austin within the next 48 hours to be their new defensive coordinator, replacing Keith Butler, according to sources.
Austin, who has been the team's senior defensive assistant/secondary coach the past three seasons, has been considered the leading candidate since Butler, 66, retired after 19 seasons with the Steelers, the last seven as defensive coordinator.
This is the third time Austin, 56, will be a defensive coordinator in the NFL. He previously served in the capacity with the Detroit Lions (2014-17) and Cincinnati Bengals (2018).
Austin, a Sharon native who played at Pitt, had a virtual interview with the New York Giants on Saturday as a potential candidate for their defensive coordinator position.
It remains to be seen how much input Austin will have in the play-calling duties because that is something Mike Tomlin has typically handled during a game.
