Callum Wilson has admitted it was 'frustrating' to be penalised for a high boot in the build-up to a potential goal during Newcastle United's draw at Brighton. Eddie Howe's side maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a goalless draw at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.
Newcastle struggled to fashion openings against the Seagulls, with two goal-line clearances and several fine saves from Nick Pope ensuring the visitors left with a point. However, the decision to blow the whistle for an infringement by Wilson before he found the back of the net in the first-half was questioned by Howe following the match.
United's number nine believes referee Graham Scott blew too quickly and denied a VAR review which may have ruled in the striker's favour. When asked about the decision on the Footballers' Football Podcast, Wilson said: "Honestly, so frustrating.

"For me, I'm in full control of what I'm doing. It's dropped on my chest, I've then tried to flick it over the player's head so I've only got eyes for the ball, and then I turn and know where I am and put it in the goal.
"But the referee had already blown his whistle so then it doesn't get to go to VAR which unfortunately if it had have done, I think he might have had a slightly different view on it when he slowed it down and realised that I'm only looking at the ball and the defender is diving in elbow first. It's one of them."
The Premier League strikers were then joined by former top-flight referee Mark Clattenburg, who admitted his judgement on the matter might be swayed by his black-and-white allegiance. However, the 47-year-old suggested the decision to allow overhead kicks casts doubt over decisions to penalise high boots, although he went on to admit that Wilson may not have scored if play had been allowed to go on.
Clattenburg said: "I've probably got a biased opinion because I'm a Newcastle fan. You know what frustrates me and referees always hide behind decisions...if you score an overhead kick, a worldie goal and it misses the head by a millimetre, everybody goes what a great goal.
"You brought the ball down, the ball must be more than few centimetres away but because he's blown his whistle, it can't go to VAR. The only thing I'll say Callum is the goalkeeper doesn't make a save, I think it's close to the goalkeeper so he probably would have saved it if the whistle hadn't gone."
