Snow predicted for many parts of the country as Met Eireann gives indication of big change at weekend

Parts of the country woke up to a blanket of snow this morning as a number of schools closed in Cork and Donegal due to the wintry weather.

Ireland is currently being blasted by freezing Arctic air and the cold spell will continue tomorrow as more snow, sleet, hail and isolated thunderstorms are forecast.

Temperatures are set to drop to -3C overnight on Tuesday with frost and icy stretches developing in many areas, leading to hazardous conditions on the roads.

A Met Eireann forecaster said for Tuesday night: "Scattered rain, sleet and snow showers will continue, most frequent in the north and west. Isolated thunderstorms may occur too with the chance of hail in coastal regions."

Met Eireann have also issued a number of weather warnings for snow and ice that cover a total of 23 counties and will remain in place overnight on Tuesday.

The first, a Status Yellow snow and ice warning for Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo says there will be "snow showers leading to some accumulations. Icy stretches too." It is valid from 9.28am on Tuesday until 9am on Wednesday morning.

The second warning for snow and ice, also a Status Yellow, covers Cavan, Monaghan, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly and Westmeath.

"Scattered sleet and snow showers with some accumulations possible. Icy stretches likely," a Met Eireann forecaster said. This warning is valid from 5.16pm on Tuesday until 9am on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a third Status Yellow snow and ice warning is in place for Northern Ireland, covering Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry. The alert was issued by the UK Met Office who said: "Snow showers and icy stretches may cause some disruption." It remains in place until 12 midday on Wednesday.

The subzero weather has also prompted Met Eireann to issue a nationwide ‘Winter Weather’ advisory, which lasts until Friday.

Tomorrow will see snow in some parts early on Wednesday morning, and it is set to be a cold day with temperatures ranging between 2C to 5C. There will be a mix of sunny spells and more snow possible as scattered wintry showers will be most frequent in the north and northwest of Ireland.

Temperatures will drop again to below zero on Wednesday night, reaching -3C overnight causing frost and icy conditions to develop.

Thursday will be a mostly dry and bright day though there could be some outbreaks of rain persisting in Munster and temperatures will hit lows of -2C overnight.

However, we are set to get a relief from the cold weather as the cold snap ends on Friday - with the temperatures expected to turn "slightly warmer".

It will generally range from 5C to 9C on Friday during the day but dull and wet conditions are forecast with "widespread outbreaks of rain" that will clear eastwards later in the day.

The weekend will be unsettled with occasional outbreaks of showery rain, mainly in the west, but temperatures will be milder ranging from 8C to 11C during the day on Saturday.
