Snapchat went down in massive outage due to AWS — live recap of how events knocked the social media app offline

Snapchat down.

Snapchat users yesterday morning (October 20) found themselves unable to log in, send Snaps or receive messages after the app fell victim to a major AWS outage. Amazon's cloud provider suffered a major problem that had a knock-on effect on thousands of online services and millions of users.

Reports on Snapchat's problems started to surface on the outage monitoring website DownDetector at around 3 a.m. ET / 7 a.m. BST. At their peak, the reports numbered over 22,000.
