Six of Bristol's best fish and chip shops

Despite all the different choices for a Friday night takeaway we cannot resist a fish supper on a Friday, and judging by the queues in most local chip shops a lot of Bristolians feel the same way. Whether you prefer the traditional cod and chips, or prefer to go for pie with mushy peas there are plenty of great options for your dinner in Bristo.

Everyone has their favourite but where in Bristol is serving up the best chippy tea? It has caused quite the debate on Bristol Live's Facebook page before now and it seems the local Reddit community also loves to celebrate the places in Bristol which does the best fried haddock and curry sauce.

Of course most people tend to choose their favourite fish and chip shop from ones local to them, but if you're looking for somewhere great to eat tonight then these are sure to be worth a try. Let us know your favourite Bristol fish and chip shops in the comments below.

Argus Fish Bar, West Street, BS3

Perhaps the most votes went to this venue in southwest Bristol. Commenters described it as “definitely the best I’ve had”, “so good” and the best “by a country mile”. Their menu includes cod, haddock, plaice and panga, for those seeking a slightly more adventurous fish supper.

Also on the menu are burgers, pies and faggots, as well as “amazing” spring rolls. Users of Tripadvisor also rate the venue highly, giving it an average score of 4 out of 5 from 52 reviews with food, service and value all scoring well.

Farrow’s Fish and Chips, Totterdown Road, BS4

Southeast Bristol benefits from this take away, several Redditors agree, which also delivers through Just Eat. Commenters describe it as “really good” and “cracking” – particularly their chips and pea fritters.

Their menu also features Cornish and cheese pasties as well as place, hake and scampi. And their gluten free dishes include cod, plaice, fritters and halloumi. Tripadvisor users rate it 4.5 out of 5, with 94 of 123 reviewers calling it “excellent”.

Causeway Fish Bar, Lodge Causeway, BS16

Redditors call this eatery “ace”, “the best I’ve had”, “surprisingly excellent” and “much nicer than any others… in the greater Fishponds area”. A visit is “worth it for the chips alone”, the portions of which are reportedly “massive”.

And for those seeking something other than fish, the kebabs (whether chicken, lamb or mixed) are apparently worthy of praise – “the second best I’ve had”, according to one commenter. Users of Uber Eats, through which the venue delivers, rate it 4.7 out of 5.

Mario’s Fish Bar, Pool Road, BS15

Out in the city’s eastern suburb of Kingswood is this popular takeaway, which got plenty of shout outs in the Reddit discussion. Its chips attracted special acclaim, of which the portion sizes are apparently “insane”.

Their specials include salt and pepper squid, breaded mushrooms and homemade fish cakes, while jacket potatoes with a side salad also feature on the menu. Mario’s gets a perfect 5 out of 5 on Tripadvisor from 77 reviews, making it the top takeaway in Kingswood.

Reel Soul, Gloucester Road, BS7

Reel Soul stands out for its gluten free batter, according to redditors. (Other coeliac-friendly recommendations include Farrow’s, Catch 22 Restaurant and Fishers Restaurant).

The Louisiana-inspired eatery also specialises in sustainably sourced produce, mixing cuisine from that region with traditional chip shop fare. “By choosing to dine at Reel Soul you are not only supporting ethical and sustainable practices but you are also supporting independent trade which is vital to our local economy,” their website declares.

Bishopston Fish Bar, Gloucester Road, BS7

A near neighbour of Reel Soul, this north Bristol takeaway also got several mentions in the thread. One commenter said of it: “Decent fish done fresh. Far too many places use cheap frozen stuff or cook it and leave it sweating for ages.”

Pies, pasties, sausages and saveloys all appear on its menu alongside cod, haddock, plaice and scampi. It gets an impressive 4.5 out of 5 average score on Tripadvisor, from 88 reviews, lending weight to its inclusion in this otherwise very subjective list.
