Several other teams including Sunderland, Portsmouth, Ipswich Town and Bolton Wanderers are members of the chasing pack, while there is an intense battle to beat the drop to League Two at the other end of the table.
Throughout the campaign, football statistics website FiveThirtyEight is forecasting how the League One table might finish after the results of every matchday, with the season reaching the climax of the regular season at the end of April before the play-offs start.
And as things stand, the Latics are being tipped to end the season as champions and will be joined in the automatic promotion spots by Rotherham.
The play-offs are predicted to be contested by MK Dons, Plymouth, Sheffield Wednesday and Oxford, with Sunderland missing out, as well as Wycombe Wanderers, Ipswich Town and Portsmouth.
Wanderers meanwhile are tipped to end the season in 11th, the position they currently occupy, and have less than a one per cent chance of being promoted according to the calculations.
