A woman is going viral on TikTok after saying she may have made what she called “an egregious and horrifying mistake” with her car.
User @eternalexistentialcrisis says she’s new to hybrids. Before this, the newest car she owned was a 2014 Ford Focus that “still runs great.” After splitting a hybrid with her brother, she says she bought a separate Hyundai through Enterprise.
At the time, she says she was told something that stuck with her.
“They explained to me … that the oil change requirements for a hybrid are much lower than a typical vehicle,” @eternalexistentialcrisis says. She adds that she was told hybrids only need an oil change once a year, which she double-checked online and believed to be true.
She says she did get an oil change “at some point,” but she couldn’t track down when or where.
“I’ve gone through all of my receipts,” @eternalexistentialcrisis says. “I can’t figure out where or when I took it last.”
The situation escalated when her oil light came on. She says she took the car to Valvoline, where employees told her the oil had turned to sludge and the engine was effectively done.
According to her, they were surprised the car was still running and declined to change the oil, instead directing her to the dealership.
That created another problem. @eternalexistentialcrisis says the dealership was closed for several days, even though she still had “hundreds” of miles to drive.
When she eventually made it in, she says she learned the hybrid battery was failing, which was “killing the 12-volt battery in the car.”
“I’m just about to lose it,” @eternalexistentialcrisis says, adding that she still owes $16,000 on the vehicle.
“I’m gonna need a #newcar,” she wrote in the caption of the clip, which had more than 2,400 views.
How Often Do You Change The Oil On A Hybrid?
Contrary to popular belief, hybrid cars don’t get a free pass on oil changes, even if the engine isn’t running all the time.
Most still need an oil change somewhere between 5,000 and 7,000 miles, according to Take5. Some manufacturers lean closer to the higher end of that range, especially with full synthetic oil, but it depends on the car and how it’s driven.
That’s where the confusion can creep in. Because hybrids rely partly, in part, on an electric motor, the gas engine isn’t under constant strain. That can stretch out the interval compared to older cars. But it doesn’t mean you only need to change the oil once a year across the board. (In fact, Toyota recommends getting an oil change two to three times per year on its hybrid models.)
Nissan reports that short trips, stop-and-go driving, and long periods of sitting can all wear down oil faster than you’d expect. And if you’re not tracking mileage closely, it’s easy to lose sight of when that last service actually happened.
The safest move is to follow the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual and pay attention to the oil life indicator if the car has one. That system is designed to account for how the car is actually being used, not just a fixed timeline.
Once oil starts to break down, it can thicken and turn into sludge, as a Valvoline rep told the content creator at their shop. At that point, you’re no longer talking about routine maintenance—but potential engine damage.
So while hybrids can go longer between changes than some older vehicles, they still need regular service. Skipping it or guessing can get expensive fast, a lesson that @eternalexistentialcrisis seems to be learning the hard way.
Viewers Encourage Woman To Take Action
People in the comments section jumped in with advice, with some saying she may not need to sink five figures into repairs and could instead cut her losses.
“Sell it to Carvana,” one woman recommended.
Others pointed out that there are ways to track down when the last oil change actually happened.
“Go on your bank/credit card app,” one person said. “You probably paid with your credit card, and you can just scroll through past purchases.”
“I’m pretty sure if you look up your CARFAX report by your VIN, it tells you every time you serviced it, and I believe that includes oil changes,” another wrote. “Something to check anyway.”
Some commenters who said they own hybrids shared their maintenance schedules.
“My hybrid manual says every 10,000 miles,” one woman shared. “It now has over 190,000 miles, so I change it every 5,000.”
“I have had 2 hybrids,” another wrote. “Have had the current one for almost 6 years. Mine gets the oil changed every 3,000 miles. Always had.”
“Every 6k miles is when I have the oil changed in my hybrid,” a third commenter wrote. “I currently have over 182K miles on it.”
