Second woman dies after Great Central Road crash in WA Goldfields

A second woman has died after a head-on crash between two vehicles in remote Western Australia.

Police say the crash occurred about 8am on Sunday on the Great Central Road at Tjukayirla, 170 kilometres south-west of Warburton and 900km north-east of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

A 31-year-old woman died at the scene as a result of her injuries.

On Monday, WA Police and health officials confirmed a second woman, 56, had died after being taken to Royal Perth Hospital.

The woman was one of five people, including the driver of one of the cars, flown from the scene to Perth by the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).

Children injured

An 11-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl were taken to the Perth Children's Hospital (PCH), while the three adults were taken to Royal Perth Hospital (RPH).

Both children were in stable conditions and the 16-year-old was expected to be discharged from the PCH later today.

A 46-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman are both stable and being cared for in the RPH state trauma centre.

Police said the incident involved a Toyota LandCruiser and a Nissan Navara.

Six people were travelling in the Nissan.

Police said the driver of the LandCruiser, the only person in the vehicle, was not seriously injured and was taken to Laverton hospital by road.

Remote rescue

Police, St John Ambulance and the RFDS were sent to the remote site after an emergency beacon was activated at the scene.

The operation to transport the five injured people to Perth saw the RFDS mobilise three aircraft, including two PC-12 single-prop planes and a jet out of Warburton.

The RFDS was supported by paramedics from St John Ambulance, who dispatched five vehicles — three from Laverton and two from Warburton.

The cause of the crash is yet to be determined.

Officers from Perth's Major Crash Investigation Section have travelled to the scene.
