Second overnight yellow weather warning issued by Met Office for ice as temperatures plummet

People braving the elements are once again being urged to take care on their travels - as a second consecutive yellow weather warning for ice has been issued across the North East.

The Met Office issued the weather alert on Sunday, which is in place from 6pm until 10am on Monday.

It comes after a weather warning last night for ice - mainly covering areas in County Durham and Northumberland.

On Sunday night's alert, a Met Office spokesperson said: "Icy surfaces are expected to develop following wintry showers leading to some difficult travelling conditions," before adding to expect "some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces" as well as "some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths".

Here's a five-day weather forecast for the North East.

Today:

A chilly start with frost in places. Bright and sunny for most of the day, although cloud amounts will gradually increase through the afternoon. Feeling cold, particularly in stronger winds during the morning. Maximum temperature 4°C.

Tonight:

Thicker cloud and outbreaks of rain will spread eastwards later this evening and overnight, with precipitation turning to snow over high ground, and perhaps to lower levels for a time. Minimum temperature -4°C.

Monday:

Overnight rain and snow will quickly clear, leaving another dry and bright day. Feeling cold despite the sunshine, with temperatures struggling to get above freezing. Maximum temperature 1°C.

Tuesday to Thursday:

Feeling cold throughout, with widespread sharp overnight frosts and ice risk. Sunny spells Tuesday, snow showers Wednesday, then dry with bright spells again Thursday. Breezy at times.
