Police, the SES and wildlife officers from the Department of Environment and Science (DES) have resumed a search for a man who disappeared while fishing in the Kennedy River on Cape York.
Emergency services were called to Kennedy Bend camping area in the Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park, north-west of Cairns, around 3.30pm on Saturday following reports a 65-year-old Laura man had disappeared.
DES said in a statement that a friend of the missing man heard splashing while fishing on the banks of the Kennedy River before the 65-year-old disappeared.
The department said Rinyirru National Park is "known croc country and known to contain large crocodiles".
A rescue helicopter and water police were deployed to the extremely remote area on Saturday but the man was not located.
The search resumed at first light on Sunday morning.
DES said roads leading into the Kennedy Bend section of Rinyirru National Park have been closed in response to the "possible crocodile incident".
"Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service Rangers attended the site yesterday with Wildlife Officers from DES also being deployed to the site today to provide assistance to police," the department said.
Health Minister Yvette D'Ath said the man's disappearance and the possibility he had been taken by a crocodile was concerning for everyone involved.
"I'm sure it's very, very distressing for the families and loved ones, and our heart goes out to them at this really difficult time," she said.
