A Jet2 plane heading from Scotland to the Canary Islands had to make an emergency landing shortly after take-off after the aircraft reportedly developed a fault.
The flight to Gran Canaria, identifier G-JZBR, departed from Edinburgh shortly after 9am on Wednesday morning, March 15, but was forced to abandon its flight path shortly after take-off due to a fault, reports Edinburgh Live. The Herald reported that the aircraft was met by two emergency vehicles on the runway.
Flightradar24 data shows that the jet deviated from its normal flight path over Dublin around 40 minutes into the journey. It then performed three "go-arounds" in the skies over Manchester before landing at Manchester Airport shortly after 10.30am.
The backup jet then took off at around 12pm, landing on the Spanish island four hours later. A spokesperson for Jet2 apologised and confirmed the minor fault as a standby aircraft was used to ensure holidaymakers got on their way to the Canaries "as soon as possible."
The spokesperson added: "Flight LS715 from Edinburgh to Gran Canaria followed procedure and diverted to Manchester Airport this morning, due to a minor fault indication. The aircraft landed safely and was met by emergency services as a precautionary measure.
"Customers will be transferred onto a standby aircraft so that we can get everyone on their way to Gran Canaria as soon as possible. We apologise to everyone onboard for any inconvenience caused."
