Scot loses five-figure sum in cryptocurrency fraud as suspect arrested amid cop raid

A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a cryptocurrency fraud which saw a Scots victim lose a five-figure sum. The alleged fraudster targeted a 30-year-old man from Inverurie, who later reported the incident to police after realising he had been conned.

Officers from Police Scotland liaised with their colleagues in West Yorkshire Police, who carried out a raid on a property in Halifax on Wednesday October 19.

After the search warrant was executed, a 22-year-old man was arrested and is due to appear in court at a later date. A report will be submitted to prosecutors for further consideration.

Detective Inspector Martyn Thomson, of the Divisional Cyber Enabled Crime Team, North East Division, said: “Criminals go to great lengths to manipulate and exploit the most vulnerable within our communities by using any means necessary.

“However, by working alongside partners across the UK, we aim to disrupt such criminality to protect our communities. “

We treat all reports of cyber fraud with the utmost seriousness and use all resources to tackle the issue.

“I would urge anyone who thinks they may have been the victim of fraud to contact their bank or financial provider and to report the matter to Police Scotland on 101.”
