Scheme to give more Australians a home step closer

A plan to increase the number of social and affordable homes across the nation will be presented to parliament by the federal government.

Housing Minister Julie Collins will introduce legislation to parliament on Thursday to establish a housing future fund, Housing Australia body and the National Housing Supply and Affordability Council.

The $10 billion future fund was a key promise from the Albanese government before the 2022 federal election as the largest housing investment in more than a decade.

Ms Collins said 30,000 social and affordable homes were anticipated to be built in the first five years of the fund and investment returns would be used in perpetuity for housing across the country.

The legislation will also set up Housing Australia, an independent body tasked with ensuring the fund is equitably and fairly distributed for builds across all states and territories, in cities and regional areas.

"We need to make sure the funding goes where it is most needed but we also need to make sure they are the right homes in the right places," Ms Collins told parliament on Wednesday.

"We will be making sure that homes are in the right places across the country (and) more Australians have a safe place to call home."

The National Housing Supply and Affordability Council will provide independent advice to government on further options to increase housing supply.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics will also release the latest data on building approvals on Thursday.
