'Say cheese' Camera designed for kids is not what it first seems

Getting your kids into gadgets can be a double-edged sword. Sure, you want them to get used to the kind of tech they are going to be using when they are older, but accidents (and therefore breakages) do happen. Kids' tech company myFirst know shows they know this well with their latest fun device - the myFirst Insta Wi.

It's an all-in-one HD photo and video camera with inkless printer and wi-fi label maker for taking photographs, video recording, instant photo printing and wireless label creation. That's a lot gadget to fit but it does it well, feeling really chunky and hard-wearing. The build quality is excellent, just what you'd want for a children's gadget.

First off, let's start with the primary function - the camera. The dual-lens 12MP digital camera - with a front and rear selfie lense - is decent but not spectacular as it's a fixed-focus lense. But really that isn't a point. I'd say it's good enough, especially if your not planning on anything super close. You can take full HD video, as well, but with the same constraints.

You can look at your pix on a 2.4'' IPS screen, as well as apply filters and stickers, before printing them using an inkless thermal instant printer that is housed in the camera. You can get an image in just ten seconds so it's pretty fast. You might need to p[rint out a couple just to get it warmed up, and the best results will come from pictures with high contrast. It's a lot of fun.

Insta Wi comes with a memory card slot so photos and videos taken can be saved and printed into colour photographs, as well. But the camera does offer something for the whole family - wireless label-making. You can download a simple mobile app and connect via wi-fi to design your own labels - or choose one of the many templates - and print them out on the camera. The printer handles text great so it's a really well done and useful feature.

The Insta Wi comes with its own crafted cradle that positions it nicely on any desk. You get a bunch of rolls of printing paper thrown in as well to get you started. There's an adjustable landyard as well, plus a microDS adapter for taking your photos with you, and a micro USB cable for charging.

The camera is available for £129. You can find out more here.
