A patch of land built from material removed from a shipping channel became an unexpected nesting site for hundreds of birds in Savannah, Georgia. In March 2014, the US Army Corps of Engineers completed an 8-acre island inside Savannah Harbor’s dredged material containment area 12A. Within its first nesting season, biologists had recorded more than 300 nests.
