It's hard to believe that it was 21 years ago today two planes were deliberately flown into New York's twin towers, killing thousands of innocent people.
In the terrifying scenes, the horrendous terror attack unfolded when 19 men hijacked four planes destined for America's west coast on the morning of September 11, 2001. Two of which were flown into the World Trade Centre, one into the Pentagon and the other crashed in Pennsylvania, believed to have been brought down by brave passengers.
Some 2,997 people were killed, 2,753 of whom died when American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 were ploughed into the north and south towers of the World Trade Centre, causing them to collapse. In the aftermath it seemed that many survival stories were full of sliding doors moments - missed trains making workers late, hangovers stopping people getting planes, and security passes not working, writes The Mirror.
