SAG Awards 2022: the best dressed stars

Sunday night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards saw a mighty turnout from the host of A-list nominees and accompanying acting royalty, albeit it with an undertone of unease. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine was made a point of in acceptance speeches, and those taking to the grey arrivals carpet did so with a little less showmanship than can often be expected.

Leading the way in smart but more considered dressing was Selena Gomez, who opted for an Oscar De La Renta gown for her first carpet appearance of 2022. There was a timeless glamour to the puff, leg of mutton sleeves on an otherwise figure-fitting black velvet gown, while some glitz came in the form of a sparkling diamond Bulgari serpent necklace worth $1million.

Lady Gaga stayed similarly restrained in comparison to her recent statement looks, in a sleek white Armani Privé dress which unfolded to reveal a crystal encrusted, golden corset. Venus Williams opted for a similar style in another straight cut white gown by Dolce & Gabbana, complete with an exposed silver bodice. HoYeon Jung, who took home the outstanding actress in a drama series award for her role in Squid Game, also stuck to black in a buttoned, jacquard Louis Vuitton gown with a front slit and crystal embroidery. She completed the look with a hair ribbon in matching fabric, inspired by a traditional daenggi, which have a centuries-long history of decorating braids in Korea.

Others did show some flair for celebration. Sandra Oh was dazzling in a tiered, foil silver shade Carolina Herrera gown, complete with bow straps and a green satin clutch.

Salma Hayek stood out in a Grecian draped, raspberry shade Gucci dress, while Helen Mirren, who collected the SAG life achievement award, looked merry in a pastel pink, long sleeve Dolce & Gabbana frock embellished with 3D flowers and a matching, raised Alice band.

The boys kept it simple, with traditional tuxedos sported by the likes of Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Benedict Cumberbatch.

However, some expected menswear va-va-voom came from Jared Leto, who was nominated for his supporting role of Paolo Gucci in House of Gucci. He remained loyal to the Italian house, and stayed true to flamboyant form in a silk satin, Gucci turquoise suit finished with a coordinating waistcoat, crimson velvet ribbon bow tie and lace gloves.
