Ryanair luggage rules: Tips to ‘carry more’ in hand luggage including wrinkle-free ‘folding’ method

Now that most travel restrictions have eased, many Irish people are preparing to jet off on their first summer holiday in over two years.

However, with the cost of living crisis continuing, holidaymakers may be looking to cut costs on their trip wherever possible.

One way to do so is by not paying extra for luggage.

Airline luggage restrictions can vary. Some carriers like Ryanair only allow passengers to take one piece of carry-on luggage onto the plane free of charge, which must fit under the seat in front of them.

While others like Aer Lingus allow travellers to take a larger 10kg bag onboard as well as a smaller personal item for free.

This means that some tourists may struggle to fit everything they want into their free luggage allowance.

However, one Reddit user has revealed a “folding” method that they claim will enable you to “carry more” and even reduce the likelihood of wrinkled clothes.

Posting under the name MysteryMeat101, the user said they "stopped rolling" their clothes and started "folding" instead, The Express reports.

"I stopped rolling and folding and my clothes are less wrinkled when I arrive and I can carry more in the same space,” they explained.

Not only does the hack fit more clothes into your bag, the user also says it makes the packing process much faster.

"I can pack for a week in just a few minutes. I packed this way for my first trip to Europe and was able to pack five days' worth of clothing, two pairs of shoes, non-liquid make-up and toiletries (travel size) in an international-sized carry on.

"I thought it sounded idiotic when I read it, but it worked for me,” they said.

Folding instead of rolling is also hailed by television star and lifestyle guru Marie Kondo.

Speaking in her Netflix show, which aired in 2019, she said: "Because I fold my clothing using the KonMari Method, it’s easy for me to pack quickly the day before I travel – which is usually the case since I travel often.

“Not only does this folding technique keep clothing neat and wrinkle-free, it also maximises the space of the suitcase.”

According to the lifestyle guru, packing vertically instead of horizontally saves space. This means she stands her clothes side by side, in soldier style, as opposed to sandwiches alongside each other horizontally.

How to do the folding method

To do the ‘folding’ method, the Reddit user said you must fold your clothes in a sort of "pile".

They explained: "I lay the first item on the bed or floor. Then I lay the next item rotated 90 degrees on top of that.

"I keep rotating 90 degrees and layering until I have everything in a pile. I finish with my underwear and socks on top in the middle.

"Then I fold all four corners and shove it in my suitcase."
