Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney almost banned celebs from Wrexham games as Hollywood actor 'broke law' in stands

Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have revealed how one of their Hollywood friends nearly landed the club in hot water by 'breaking the law' in the stands. It came after the pair vowed to ban celebrities from games after a heartbreaking defeat at Wembley last year.

This season has seen several actors and comedians travel to the Racecourse ground to cheer on Wrexham as they marched towards the National League title. The likes of Will Ferrell, Anna Corrin and McElhenney's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-stars Kaitlin Olson, Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day have all been seen in the stands, while Paul Rudd was in attendance for the memorable Boreham Wood game that saw the Red Dragons seal promotion with the Hollywood actor capturing the historic moment on film.

However, Reynolds and McElhenney have now revealed that counting on their friends for support almost backfired, with Day falling foul of stadium rules while watching Wrexham's 3-0 win over Yeovil in April.

Discussing the memorable season on the RobRyanRed podcast, the pair explained how the actor, also known for his roles in Horrible Bosses and Pacific Rim, did not realise that drinking alcohol in the stands, while a common practice in the States, was not allowed in the UK.

"He was the only one to get busted drinking alcohol because he didn't know," said McElhenney. "I mean, what people truly don't understand is Americans, we don't understand that rule, we didn't know that was a rule.

"So he was sitting outside in the box drinking a beer and nobody noticed or didn't say anything and somebody took a still frame and texted it to me. They said 'get your boy off the balcony or you're going to get a fine' and of course he ran back inside because he had no idea what the law was and that's something he'll take to his grave.'

While Day got away with it in the end, he was lucky to get an invite to the Racecourse in the first place, with Reynolds and McElhenney swearing off inviting any more of their famous friends after watching their side fall to a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat against Bromley in the FA Trophy at Wembley last season in the company of Ferrell and David Beckham.

However, after Wrexham stormed to the title with 111 points to their name having been cheered on by a bevy of stars, the owners have now had a change of tune

'We decided no more celebrities because they were just a bad luck charm but I guess we don't have to worry about that anymore," said McElhenney, with Reynolds adding: "Yeah it sort of worked out".

"Will (Ferrell) saw a great game. Emma (Corrin) saw an amazing match as well. Glen (Howerton) and Charlie (Day) and Kaitlin (Olson) saw a great one. We've had Paul and Joe Russo. They saw just the one to end it. I mean that was just the most incredible thing."
