Rutherglen Glencairn boss Willie Harvey has told his players they owe the club a massive apology after losing 2-1 at relegation-haunted Whitletts Vics on Saturday.
Jack McIlveen gave Glens a second-minute opener, only for Jordan Baird and Jordan Boyd to give Vics a win that boosts their survival hopes in the West of Scotland League First Division.
Raging Harvey says it was a missed opportunity as the defeat dropped Glens to eighth in the table, when a win would have put them back up to fifth.
He said: “I was very unhappy with the players.
“They owe a massive apology to the fans that travelled down there on Saturday, and to the committee and everyone involved with the club.
“They really let themselves down on Saturday and really let the club down.
“We just didn’t perform. I felt the effort wasn’t there, basically our all-round game just wasn’t there on Saturday.
“A couple of results went our way on Saturday that if we had got the win it would have moved us back up the league to about fifth or fourth, and instead of that we went down to eighth.
“It’s about keeping momentum. If you lose momentum you start to slip, and if we let our standards slip then it will turn a season that has been reasonable into a very poor season.”
Glens will be left to stew on the result a while longer with the team in cup action this weekend.
But Harvey has demanded a reaction from them when they host Second Division Craigmark Burntonians in the West of Scotland Cup third round clash.
Harvey added: “I will be looking for a reaction.
“Over the last two weeks we haven’t earned the right to play our style of football and that’s what we’ve got to get into them.
“I let my feelings be known on Saturday after the game, and I will let my feelings be known at training this week, but after that we will put it to bed and move forward.
“We’ll sort things out and hopefully get back on the rails for next Saturday.
“We’ll make sure that we sort it out right away, we won’t let it linger.”
Kick-off on Saturday is 2pm.
