Rupert Grint throws his support behind Harry Potter TV adaptation: ‘I’d love to see it’

Rupert Grint has voiced his support for a TV adaptation of Harry Potter franchise amid speculation studio bosses are considering a reboot.

The 34-year-old was catapulted into the spotlight aged 11 playing Ron Weasley in the first instalment of J. K. Rowling’s adaptations opposite Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe.

He went on to play the beloved character for eight films, before the film franchise came to an end in 2011.

Speaking to GQ Hype, Grint said: “I’d love to see Harry Potter be adapted into a TV show. I think it would really work. I’m sure the films will get remade, anyway.”

Aside from new possible incarnations of the beloved film franchise, the Snatch actor discussed the death of actor Richard Harris, who played Albus Dumbledore in the first two movies.

The British star admitted that the acclaimed star’s death in 2002, aged 72 after a battle with cancer, was the first loss he had ever experienced and was a difficult to comprehend as a 13-year-old.

He recalled to the outlet: “I was 13, in a hotel promoting the second movie, when I was told. It was a hard thing to contemplate.”

Grint also opened up on the impact of other cast members’ deaths, including Alan Rickman, who played Severus Snape, and Helen McCrory (Narcissa Malfoy) both from cancer, in the years since filming wrapped.

“Not parents but uncles or grandparents,” he added. “They all had this kind of subconscious presence in my life.”

His candid comments come days after Grint confirmed he would be prepared to return to the wizarding world as long as “the timing was right and everyone was coming back”.

In 2021, the trio reunited as they returned to Hogwarts for the franchise’s 20th anniversary at the Warner Bros Studios.

Although 12 years have passed since the final film, Potterheads have long hoped he and his co-stars would return to the roles that made them household names.

And now, Grint has hinted he’d be up to reprising his role during an appearance on Thursday’s (January 26) This Morning.

The actor told hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield: “Yeah, I think if the timing was right and everyone was kind of coming back, I would revisit.

“It’s a character that’s important to me and I grew up with him – we kind of became the same person. I feel quite protective of him as well. It was my whole childhood.”
