An abandoned dog found tied to a bush with his friend was later discovered to have a tumour during a routine neutering.
Freshfields kennel assistant Vikki Ferguson was driving home from the charity's rescue centre on East Lane in Sefton in April when she spotted two dogs tied to a bush. At first, she thought they were being walked by a Freshfields volunteer, but then she saw they were tied up.
One of the dogs, Maggie, was quickly rehomed but Rubble had a more difficult journey. A "worrying lump" was found when he underwent a routine neutering procedure and was suspected to be a high-grade mast cell tumour, an aggressive tumour that spreads across the body.

Rubble went back to the vet on Wednesday, June 22, for further surgery and tissue samples were sent off, with volunteers and staff at the animal rescue centre waiting eagerly for the tests' results. The tumour was found to be a low-grade mast cell tumour and vets were confident they had removed it all.
Freshfields has now confirmed Rubble is on the road to recovery and just needs to wear an inflatable buster collar before he is back to full health. Now, Rubble has moved into a new foster home.
The charity shared the rollercoaster story on its Facebook. The post said: "After being found abandoned outside the rescue back in April, Rubble’s journey to happiness hit further hurdles when a rather worrying lump was found during his routine neutering operation. It was suspected to be a high grade mast cell tumour which was likely to have spread.
"Rubble returned to the vets on Wednesday 22nd June for further surgery and tissue samples were sent away. We were all so worried about our lovely boy and eagerly awaited the results.
"We were delighted when we were informed that the lump was a low grade mast cell tumour and the vets were confident that they had removed it all. Rubble is now on the road to recovery, he just needed to wear the dreaded inflatable buster collar for a little while longer!
"We are so pleased to announce that he has moved into a foster home where is doing extremely well."
