Rishi Sunak 'doubts' Lisa Cameron still supports independence

RISHI Sunak “doubts” SNP defector Lisa Cameron still supports independence.

The Prime Minister’s spokeswoman said it was not known whether the pair had spoken – despite reports he had orchestrated her defection – and said Cameron was a “very valued colleague”.

When it was put to her the East Kilbride MP may still support independence, she added: “I doubt that.”

Speaking to reporters in Westminster today, the spokeswoman said: “She’s a very valued colleague on our benches now and I think she’s spoken about the pretty torrid time she’s had with the SNP and we’re very glad to have her with us.”

Cameron was before PMQs on Wednesday speaking with Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross, former minister Iain Duncan Smith and Hartlepool MP Jill Mortimer who led her to her new seat on the Government benches.

She voted with the Government for the first time since joining the Conservatives the day before, during the passage of the Levelling Up Bill.

Cameron has faced calls to quit as an MP over her defection, which she said happened as a result of bullying within the SNP group in Westminster.

Since joining the Conservatives, she has sparked anger among her constituents after giving East Kilbride its first Tory MP in history.

The MP has claimed she has been forced into hiding over threats made against her online.
