Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has delivered a blunt message to international students caught in Canada's increasingly restrictive immigration system: a study visa is temporary, and those who cannot secure permanent residency after their permitted stay should return home.
"A student visa is a temporary document to study in Canada. That was always understood," Smith said in a post on X.
She argued that Alberta's colleges and universities were primarily established to serve students from the province and said international students should understand the terms attached to studying in Canada.
"Where there is room for international students, the terms are simple. Earn your education, then return home to build a life with it," she added.
