One of the Houston Texans veteran pass rushers who was coming into his own may be out for an extended period of time.
According to Aaron Wilson from the Pro Football Network, defensive end Derek Rivers tore his biceps in the 17-0 win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Rivers left was injured on a second-and-12 from the 49ers’ 48-yard line with 7:31 to go in the preseason finale. Rivers finished the game with two combined tackles, a quarterback hit, and a tackle for loss.
Coach Lovie Smith was complimentary of Rivers during his meeting with reporters on Friday.
“Every game I think we’ve talked about how Derek has played,” said Smith. “He has been force outside rushing the passer. Just love everything he’s done so it’s just unfortunate that he went down with an injury.”
Rivers, a 2017 third-round pick for the New England Patriots, played five games for Houston last season, starting in one, and racking up nine tackles, 1.0 sack, two tackles for loss, and a quarterback hit.
