Report: Packers QB Aaron Rodgers talks with Jets, is ‘open’ to playing in New York

Are the wheels in motion on a trade that will send future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers to the New York Jets?

According to Trey Wingo of Pro Football Network, Rodgers and the Jets “had conversations” on Monday and the 39-year-old quarterback is “open” to playing in New York in 2023.

The report would assume a few things: Rodgers wants to play next season, the Packers gave him permission to talk with the Jets and a divorce ending with Rodgers in New York is now the most likely outcome.

The Jets talking with Rodgers without the Packers’ permission would be tampering and subject to league discipline.

Rodgers has not publicly announced his intentions for the 2023 season, and Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said last week that he still needed to have important conversations with Rodgers about the future. It’s possible those conversations are done and the next steps are happening.

If the Packers want to move on to Jordan Love, or Rodgers is ready for a new challenge in professional football, a trade out of Green Bay is the only avenue.

The Jets are desperate for a veteran quarterback and have pegged Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, as the team’s preferred option.

For reference, Wingo reported in 2021 that Rodgers would be back in Green Bay if Randall Cobb returned to the Packers beforehand.
