Report: Colts had concerns about Jimmy Garoppolo’s recovery timeline

The Indianapolis Colts traded a third-round pick to the Atlanta Falcons for quarterback Matt Ryan and if you were wondering why they didn’t go after Jimmy Garoppolo, we may have an answer.

While the Colts certainly had interest in trading for Garoppolo at the beginning of the offseason, the recent shoulder surgery he underwent clouded his timeline for return.

Not having the starting quarterback be able to take part in the offseason workouts reportedly rose as a red flag for the Colts, per Dianna Russini of ESPN. So they focused their efforts on the aforementioned Ryan.

It doesn’t really have that much of an impact for the Colts now but at least we know why the interest in Garoppolo never grew legs like it did with Ryan.

The Colts traded for Carson Wentz last offseason and even though he was healthy, the team opted to change the offseason workout schedule. Not having a new quarterback get time to work within the offseason—even in shorts—contributed to the team’s slow start.

The Colts won’t begin offseason workouts until April 18, but they already have their quarterback after trading for Ryan on Monday.
