Remove 'awful smell' from toilets with 29p natural odour neutraliser

Whether you love cleaning or find it an absolute chore, we can all agree that the job we hate the most is scrubbing the toilet. But unfortunately, it's also one of the most important areas to clean regularly, as it can harbour nasty odours that can be difficult to get rid of if they're not taken care of quickly.

Thankfully though, you don't actually need to spend hours hunched over your toilet bowl, nor do you need to spend money on expensive odour-busting products, as there's actually a cheap and easy way to banish the smells in no time.

According to fans of cleaning guru Mrs Hinch, all you need is some white vinegar, which can vaporise the odour overnight, leaving you with a fresh-smelling bowl in the morning - and it costs as little as 29p.

On a Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips page on Facebook, one woman asked: "Can anyone help me I've tried everything to get rid of the awful urine smell in my loo? I've tried bicarbonate of soda, shaving foam, bleach, different toilet cleaners, toilet powder but nothing is shifting it."

And among the replies were several people telling her to try white vinegar, which they recommended she leaves in her toilet bowl overnight for a clean smell by the morning - although others claimed the smell would vanish within "10 minutes".

One person wrote: "Put vinegar in the holding tank and in the bowl, let sit overnight, and the smell will be gone by morning."

While another said: "White vinegar, it's the natural opposite of urine on the table of elements. It is a natural odour neutraliser as well. You’ll find the smell will be gone after 10 minutes.”

And a third added: "Use white vinegar but make sure you're letting it sit. We all have a tendency to spray and wipe within a few minutes. It needs to sit for some time to actually work the way it should."

"I had this same issue too, it was driving me mad," someone else posted, "I've just tried white vinegar last night and there's no longer any bad smell."

Many of us will already have white vinegar in our kitchen cupboards, as it's a common cooking ingredient and can also be used for dozens of cleaning jobs around the house.

But if you need to dash out to buy some, you can find it in supermarkets such as Tesco for as little as 29p, while Wilko sells a spray bottle specifically designed for cleaning for £1.50.

You can also buy huge five-litre jugs of white vinegar from Amazon, where prices start at around £6.

White vinegar is organic and is a mild acid, which means it won't harm your fingers or damage the toilet bowl if you decide to use it to clean your bathroom. The vinegar kills bacteria and will help to neutralise any unpleasant urine odours.
