Grandmaster Flash and Furious Five founding member Kidd Creole has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for stabbing a homeless man to death.
Nathaniel Glover, better known as Kidd Creole, was convicted of first-degree manslaughter last month after he stabbed a homeless man he thought was gay in New York City in 2017.
As well as the 16-year sentence, he will also face five years of post-release supervision. He had originally faced a maximum of 25 years in prison.
The rapper, 62, had pleaded not guilty and it was argued by his attorneys the star had lashed out in self defence.
Glover, who was part of the the pioneering '70s and '80s hip-hop groups, stabbed 55-year-old John Jolly twice in the chest with a steak knife after allegedly thinking he was hitting on him while he was on the way to his maintenance job.
Authorities said Jolly had asked the musician: "What's up?"
Jolly was discovered by tourists passing by moments later and died after being taken to hospital.
It's reported that Glover fled the scene to his work place which was two blocks away and quickly changed his clothing and cleaned the knife in a sink in the office.
He is then said to have boarded a subway approximately 15 minutes later and disposed of the knife in a sewer.
Assistant DA Mark Dahl said during the trial: "The defendant confessed to pulling out a kitchen knife and repeatedly thrusting it into the body of a stranger on the street, killing him Was there anything that would prevent him from simply running away from Mr. Jolly? No."
At his sentencing Glover was unhappy at being labelled a killer and condemned the way the case had been reported.
He said: "I’m very disappointed in the way that that this whole situation played out. I’ve been portrayed as a callous and senseless [killer]…which is far from the person who I am.
"I’ve been slandered and all this made me seem as if I am a person who actually has no remorse and no repentance."
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg told ABC7 New York on Wednesday: "Mr. Jolly's death was devastating to his family and those who knew him.
"Every life we lose to violent crime ripples throughout our entire city, and we will continue to ensure everyone in our borough can live their lives with the sense of safety and security they deserve."
He added: "This case makes clear that if you commit violent crime, we will hold you accountable, and I thank our team for their hard work achieving justice in this matter."
