The UK music industry boomed in 2025: So why are artists struggling?

Paris Paloma - (Press handout)

2025 was a boom year for the UK record industry, with new figures from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) showing that recorded music consumption across sales and streams increased by 4.9 per cent over the last 12 months to hit a new high of 210.3 million albums being consumed. The BPI made an analysis of Official Charts data and found the streaming market surpassed 200 billion streams for the first time, a 5.5 per cent year-on-year increase, while vinyl sales also rose for the 18th consecutive year (overall physical sales, including tapes and CDs rose a little, 1.4 per cent).

The BPI attributed much of this to the success of British talent at home and abroad with the likes of Olivia Dean (who became the first woman to score a debut number one single and album in the same week, for Man I Need and The Art of Loving respectively), Lola Young and Lily Allen leading the charge.
