Queen's 'unexpected' trick to end handshakes during royal engagements

It's no secret that a huge part of the Queen's job is to meet various different people from all over the world, and in many circumstances it involves meeting lots of people in a short time period.

Her Majesty always puts on a kind and polite display, but if she spent too long conversing with everyone she met, she'd simply never get anything done - which is why she has become a master at ending conversations as politely and briskly as possible.

During her 70 years on the throne, the Queen has become an expert at this, with many people who have had the pleasure of meeting her commenting on she got them to step back after shaking their hand.

Kate Winslet is one of the many stars who have spoken about meeting with the Queen, and her rather unusual method when it comes to shaking hands, MyLondon reports.

The Oscar-winning actress was awarded a CBE by The Queen in 2012 and later spoke about the encounter during an appearance on the Graham Norton show where she was asked what the monarch is like and what they spoke about.

"She did this most extraordinary thing. Of course, there is a system and she is very well rehearsed and very well practised at this. You are told what to do and you step forwards and curtsy or bow or whatever fumble, terrible thing I probably did," Kate commented.

"And then you put out your hand to shake it and she sort of gives you this suggestive nudge backwards, like, 'you’re done, that’s it. Go back again. I was like oh okay, I wasn't expecting that.'"

Graham then asked Kate what she and the Queen spoke about when she received her honour, and the response was very touching.

The Titanic star recalled: "She said 'congratulations on all your achievements.' She said 'you are a mother aren’t you?' And I said yes, and she said 'well that is the only job.' And I thought good lady, I was really, really touched that she said that."

Graham then interjected by making a pushing back motion and joked: "And then she went, 'better get back to it.'"
