A traditional country pub and restaurant is on the market as its owners announce “with a heavy heart...now is the time to retire”.
The Kirkmichael Arms, on Straiton Road in Kirkmichael village near Maybole, is up for sale at offers over £349,000 as owners Dorothy and Andrew Birks look to retire.
Dorothy and Andrew reopened the dog-friendly premises in 2012, completely renovating it and maintaining it for the last 11 years.
Now, the cottage style property - which boasts a pub, 56-cover restaurant and owners flat - has been brought to market by DM Hall.
The public bar area adjoins the well-appointed restaurant, which links to a fully fitted kitchen and stores, toilets and a private dining room.
Owner’s accommodation in the attic contains a kitchenette, lounge, bedroom and a shower room with toilet.
A note on The Kirkmichael Arms website reads: “Dear friends and loyal customers, as you will all know we have been trying to source new chefs for sometime now without success.
“We have decided with a heavy heart that now is the time for us to retire and put the pub on the market.
“It has been 11 years almost to the day we reopened The Kirkmichael Arms and have made many friends and sadly lost some too - met some wonderful people over the years.
“We have had many a laugh and it is sad that it has come to an end like this.
“We wish you all the very best for the future, Dorothy, Andy and The Kirkmichael Arms Team.”
Anthony Zdanowicz, a commercial property Associate based in the Ayr office of DM Hall, who, together with his colleague Margaret Mitchell of DM Hall’s Business Sales Team, is overseeing the sale, said: “The Kirkmichael Arms has been owned by our clients since 2011 and is being sold due to retirement.
“It operated previously on a 6-day per week basis with the licence allowing wet sales trade between 12-12.30am and was run full time by the vendor with a team of eight staff, offering growth potential for a chef owner occupier.
“Sales have been consistent over the years and returned to historic trading levels readily after Covid, with turnover of £327,000 in the year ending March 2022 and good profit levels. Accounts are available to interested parties.”
