The phone rings. The number is unfamiliar. Instead of answering, some people immediately let it go to voicemail or wait for a message. To them, picking up an unknown call can feel unnecessary, intrusive or even slightly stressful. But what does the psychology of people who don't pick up calls from unknown numbers actually reveal?
There is no single personality type behind the behavior. Some people are simply protecting their privacy or avoiding spam. Others prefer texting because it gives them more control over when and how they respond. For some, however, consistently avoiding unfamiliar calls can be connected with uncertainty intolerance, social anxiety, threat appraisal or avoidance learning.
