PSG 'eye' Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards after Champions League exit

Paris Saint-Germain are eyeing a move for Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards, according to recent reports. This comes after their dramatic Champions League exit last week as they were defeated 3-2 on aggregate by Real Madrid.

The Telegraph claims Edwards is on a shortlist of potential candidates to fulfil a similar role as they look to take a new direction following the defeat.

Edwards, who has enjoyed 10 incredibly successful years at Anfield, announced in November he will be leaving his role at the end of the season having chosen not to extend his current deal.

During his time on Merseyside, the former Tottenham and Portsmouth man has recruited the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Fabinho and Alisson among others. Julian Ward, who played a crucial role in bringing Luis Diaz to the club in January, will be promoted to replace him.

The article suggests Edwards isn't the only candidate being considered by PSG, but his success at Liverpool has attracted interest. Andrea Berta at Atletico Madrid, Giovanni Rossi at Sassuolo and Hugo Viana at Sporting Lisbon are also said to be under consideration.

In an open letter to supporters, Edwards wrote in November: "Ten years, that’s a pretty long time in anyone’s working life. In football terms, it is an era in itself, particularly at a club like Liverpool where the expectations and standards are never anything other than as high as the supporters deserve.

"To be part of this club during this period has been a privilege due to the people I have been fortunate enough to work with and the success we have enjoyed.

"But all good things must come to an end and, in my case, I recently completed my final summer window as Liverpool sporting director. Even writing those words seems a bit surreal, but at the end of this season I will pack up my laptop and leave my office at the AXA Training Centre for the last time."
