During a recent court hearing in the High Court, Prince Harry's lawyer made startling accusations against media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his British tabloids. The lawyer alleged that Murdoch was aware of cover-ups involving unlawful spying techniques used on the Duke of Sussex and others by News Group Newspapers.
The lawsuit, which also includes actor Hugh Grant as a claimant, seeks to amend the case to include claims that executives were involved in concealing and destroying evidence of wrongdoing. The lawyer implied that such actions would not have been taken without Murdoch's knowledge and approval.
In response, the defense lawyer argued that the proposed changes to the case were unnecessary and appeared to be part of a broader campaign against the tabloid press.
Prince Harry, known for his ongoing legal battles against British tabloids, has previously won a case against Mirror Group Newspapers for phone hacking. He has another case pending against the owner of the Daily Mail.
The claims in the News Group case allege that journalists engaged in unlawful activities such as intercepting voicemails, tapping phones, and using deception to access confidential information. Executives are accused of lying about these actions and attempting to delete evidence.
News of the World, a tabloid under Murdoch's ownership, shut down in 2011 amid a phone hacking scandal. News Group Newspapers has settled numerous claims related to the scandal but has not accepted liability.
The lawsuit has brought to light the alleged misconduct within the tabloid industry and has put Prince Harry at odds with the royal family, as he continues to fight against what he perceives as press intrusion into his personal life.
