Postal voters won't need ID to vote in elections when law changes

Voters will require ID to cast their ballots in elections after May 2023.

But the new rules only apply to those voting in person. Anybody who chooses to vote by post will not require ID, but must apply for a postal ballot for the election they are voting in.

From May 4, 2023, people voting in person in elections and referendums in England will be required to show ID. Passports, driving licences, PASS cards, blue badges, disabled bus passes, senior bus passes and residency permits are among the IDs that will be accepted. Those who do not have any ID and do not wish to get one can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate which they can show to vote.
