Porto president tells Arsenal and Manchester United what they must do to sign Vitinha

Arsenal are expected to have a very busy summer transfer window as Mikel Arteta continues the process of moulding the side into one that fully represents his vision.

Addressing the frontline is imperative and should be the club's number one objective, with two quality forwards of varying profiles needed to raise both the floor and ceiling of the squad.

However, other areas within the team also need to be reinforced, one of which is central midfield. Mohammed Elneny's contract extension will most likely mean that the Egyptian will be Thomas Partey's backup, with Albert Sambi Lokonga expected to be coached into playing as a number six.

On the other side of midfield, Granit Xhaka has been integral to the way Arsenal functions under Arteta, but with the Spaniard making specific tweaks to the system, there is now great responsibility given to the player operating in this position between the lines and inside the final third, which places the Swiss international at a disadvantage.

Xhaka is a player who excels in aiding the overall progression of the team, breaking lines from deep, but he doesn't possess the mobility or speed of action in tight spaces higher up the pitch.

A stylistically different profile to the 29-year-old is therefore imperative, hence why the Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for Leicester City's Youri Tielemans, who essentially offers qualities that Xhaka lacks.

Recent reports have linked the north Londoners to Portuguese midfielder Vítinha, who could potentially be seen as a Tielemans alternative.

Both Arsenal and Manchester United are reportedly battling it out for his signature, and Porto president Pinto da Costa has now confirmed that bids have been made for Vitinha, although he has reiterated that the player will only leave if his release clause is met.

In a tweet made by well-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano, Costa stated that there is strong interest in the 22-year-old.

"We've received a concrete proposal for Vitinha, yes - it was a good bid, but we did not accept," he said.

"So we mentioned again the release clause, which is the only way to sign Vitinha."

Vitinha will certainly improve either Arsenal or United's midfield options, but there's a long way to go as things stand.
