Popular Cardiff cafe Hard Lines announce plans for new roastery bar

A popular Cardiff coffee shop has revealed plans to open a roastery bar.

Hard Lines, which has sites on Cowbridge Road East in Canton and in Cardiff Market, announced that they will be opening a new roastery bar in Gwaelod-y-Garth.

The roastery located on Fairfield industrial estate has long supplied the cafe's coffee but this will be the first time it is open to the public to visit.

The new space will open on Friday, February 18.

"It's been a long time coming, between Covid, delays, and staffing we've had a lot we've needed to get in place before feeling confident of opening the space to customers," an Instagram post announcing the new roastery bar read.

"We now feel ready and that the time is right to open the shutters to the local community and regular runners, walkers, and cyclists that make the area special."

Hard Lines has been roasting coffee at the site, which is now their main roastery, for around six to eight months, but the bar will be a new addition.

Matt Jones, co-owner of Hard Lines, told WalesOnline that the team behind the coffee shop had built a bar within the roastery to accommodate those walking, running, and cycling in the area.

"It's very much more of a grab and go situation as opposed to a WiFi cafe kind of environment," he said.

The bar is set to be open five days a week between Wednesday and Sunday, from around 8am until 4pm.

"Then we'll serve fresh pastries on the weekend, sweet treats that you can grab and go, maybe some fresh bread from local bakeries and a large coffee offering to showcase all of our coffees," Matt continued.

"At any one time we might have six to eight coffees on. So, that's a good way for people who are into coffee to be able to come down and chat with the guys on the bar and learn a bit more about coffee."

The new space is close to the Taff Trail and a 25 minute cycle from Cardiff city centre.

"Before we had this space here, we used to roast in our cafe space in Canton, but when the roasting became very popular, we had to remove the roasting from there and give it it's own home," Matt said.

"People were already used to seeing us roast alongside serving food and drink, so it was really important to us when we moved out here to still be able to allow us to show people almost behind the scenes."

Matt added that there is still more to add to the site, including plans for a training room and tasting room, and that the coffee bar will be "more of a stop off and move on space" with "stripped-back bench seating."

He added that the coffee bar will serve cakes and pastries, but will be different from the Canton site that serves burritos and breakfasts.

"It's very coffee focused and coffee driven," he said.

"We're trying to offer something different and hopefully service the big cycling and running community as well as the local community."

He continued: "Ultimately, where we are out in Gwaelod and Taff's Well, there's not a great deal for people to get their hands on in terms of good quality coffee or a stop to take a walk to on a weekend or Saturday morning, if someone in Gwaelod maybe wanted to stroll down to get a nice coffee.

"We thought it was nice to service the local community a bit more and give something to the area that we're in, to give something back like a space where people can maybe start or end their day."
