Poll shows more people blame Tories than workers for wave of winter strikes

More people blame the Government than unions for this winter’s wave of strikes, a poll revealed tonight.

Nurses, ambulance staff, railway workers, posties and Border Force guards are among those staging walkouts this month.

An online Opinium study of 2,000 people for the Compassion in Politics think tank found 41% believe the Tories are responsible, 35% say unions and 11% blame employers.

However, the survey - seen exclusively by the Mirror - revealed a big split among Tory and Labour voters over who they believed was to blame.

Some 65% of Conservative voters said the unions were responsible, compared with just 13% of Labour voters.

Sixty-five per cent of Labour supporters blamed the Government, against only 19% of Tory backers.

Compassion in Politics co-director Jeenifer Nadel said: “While some in government might have hoped to pin the blame for the strikes on the workers and unions, our polling suggests the public think otherwise - and that shouldn’t come as a surprise.

“People understand – often through their own personal experience and pain – that year-on-year cuts to wages, an escalating cost-of-living crisis, and unstable job conditions can make working life intolerable.

“The Government’s job now is to take a responsible position, engage with the unions representing their workers, and identify the interventions necessary to build an economy which can allow everyone to lead a good and healthy life.”
