A minister has suggested the Labour Party is "trying to hide" the details surrounding the appointment of Sue Gray as Sir Keir Starmer’s new chief of staff.

Jeremy Quin, the Paymaster General, claimed Labour was being "evasive" about the circumstances of the appointment as he urged the party to be transparent about how the job was offered.

Responding to an urgent question on the subject in the House of Commons, Mr Quin said: "Why are they refusing to publish when they met with Sue Gray? Why are they being evasive? Why can't they tell us what they discussed, where they met, how often they met?

"Their refusal to do so begs the question, exactly what is Labour trying to hide?

"Many across the House have noticed that the Leader of the Opposition has a tendency to claim a self-righteous monopoly on morals but there are now serious questions as to whether Labour by acting fast and loose undermined the rules and the impartiality of the civil service."

Angela Rayner, the deputy leader of the Labour Party, had earlier accused Tory MPs of using parliamentary time to indulge in "conspiracy theories" about the appointment.

She asked: "What will they ask for next? A Westminster Hall debate on the Moon landings?"

Sir Keir this morning refused six times to answer when Labour had first approached Ms Gray about the role.
