Merseyside's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) is looking for a deputy to assist her.
Emily Spurrell was elected as the Labour PCC last year in a role that oversees and scrutinises the work of Merseyside Police. She is now advertising for an “experienced and dedicated individual” Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner to work alongside her.
The successful candidate will work alongside the Commissioner to deliver her Police and Crime Plan for Merseyside and be able to deputise for her, when necessary, while also leading on a number of vital areas of policing and community safety.

As part of a recent review of the PCC role, the Home Office indicated they will require all PCCs to appoint a Deputy.
Under the terms of the legislation which dictates how PCCs operate, Ms Spurrell pointed out that she could make a personal appointment to the Deputy position, but she has chosen to advertise the part time role and carry out independently observed interviews in order to increase the openness and transparency of the selection process.
The role is being on offered on a fixed term contract until May 2024, working three days a week, with a salary of £33,537 per annum . Ms Spurrell receives a salary of £86,600 per year in her role.
The Commissioner is inviting applications from those who have significant leadership experience or individuals who are well-connected community figures for the role. The deadline for applications is Sunday October 30.
Interviews will take place on Wednesday November 16, led by the Commissioner and her Chief Executive Sue McTaggart MBE joined by an external, independent interviewer. The body which scrutinises the PCC’s work, the Police and Crime Panel, will also support the process.
Following the interview process, the successful candidate will then be put forward for a confirmation hearing with the Police and Crime Panel, who will review the appointment.

The advert states that while being a member of the Labour Party is not a requirement for the role, candidates will be expected to share Emily’s values and principles. The successful applicant will also be required to pass a vetting check and must meet all the statutory requirements of the Deputy PCC within the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011.
