PM Modi condoles demise of senior IIS SM Khan, sends condolence message

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed heartfelt grief at the death of senior Indian Information Service Officer and Press Secretary to the former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, SM Khan. 

He belonged to the 1982 batch of IIS. 

PM writes letter to SM Khan's wife 

In a letter to Khan's wife Shahnaz Khan, PM called his demise an 'irreparable loss to the society'. 

PM sent his condolence message from Guyana in which he wrote that he dedicatedly worked as an Indian Information Officer and his nature of taking everyone along was remarkable. 

"Khan wholeheartedly fulfilled his duties and responsibilities. He will always be rembembered for his good deeds for people. His demise is an irreparable loss to the society. It is difficult to express the pain of loneliness in words you felt following the demise of  S.M. Khan," PM wrote in the letter.

His memories will always be with us, PM further added. 

Modi also wished that his well wishers and loved ones get the strength to bear the loss of his death.

Khan passed away in Delhi last Sunday at the age of 67. His last rites were performed on Monday afternoon in his hometown Khurja, Uttar Pradesh, where several dignitaries, including politicians, Industraialists, journalists, bureaucrats and intellectuals, from across the country paid their last respect. 

Born in Kurja, Bulandshahr
He was born to a family of lawyers on June 15, 1957 at Khurja in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh. 

Education
He did his LLB and then LLM from Aligarh Muslim University and won the Chancellor’s Gold Medal. He later went to University of Wales for a degree in Economics.

Press Secretary to Ex-President Kalam
S.M. Khan was the Press Secretary to the former President APJ Abdul Kalam.

After his term ended with the President, Khan moved to a prestigious position as the Director General (News) at Doordarshan News.

Spokesperson, CBI
During his 13-year stint — 1989 to 2002 — at the CBI, Khan was the face of the Agency when it was handling several high-profile cases. 

Vice-President, IICC
He also held the position of Vice-President and trustee at the India Islamic and Cultural Centre, Delhi.

Member of AMU Court
Khan was also a member of the Aligarh Muslim University Court and was also appointed by the President of India as his nominee in the Executive Council of the AMU.
