Plans to transform 143-year-old chapel in Swansea into a house

A historic Swansea chapel which dates back to the 1800s looks set to become a house. Swansea Council has received a planning application asking to transform Bethany Chapel in the Waunarlwdd area of the city.

Russel Bateman wants to change the use of the 143-year-old chapel to a single dwelling, with alterations including new windows and bi-fold doors. The plans also detail the installation of a new first floor to create three bedrooms, and at ground level, a separate living and kitchen space.

The place of worship can be found at 28 Bryn Road and was first built in 1876, modified in 1883 and rebuilt in 1908. WalesOnline reported in 2020 how it went under the hammer at auction with the price tag of £33,500. Get Swansea stories straight to your inbox with our newsletter.

Inside Bethany Chapel (Seel & Co)

The chapel is from the post medieval era and is built of stone in the simple round-headed style with a gable-entry in the facade facing onto the road. It is surrounded by a graveyard. It is not the only former chapel across the city which has been subject to transformation plans in recent years. Many have had their identities changed into something completely different over the years. You can read more about that by clicking here.

Elsewhere in the city, in May earlier this year, we reported how the Grade II listed Brynhyfryd Chapel, which was built in the 18th century and used a Sunday school for generations, had been transformed into a mosque by Muslim Welfare House, which had worked hard for two years to breathe new life into the historic building. Swansea Council's planning department will now consider the Bethany Chapel application.
