An anti-littering campaigner has released a shocking gallery of photos revealing the vast 'tsunami' of rubbish strewn alongside Britain's m-ways and roads. John Read - Founder of Clean Up Britain- drives around the UK recording how the nation is being blighted by fly-tipping and rubbish.
During his travels he has discovered that the UK's dirtiest sites are alongside motorways and road where lazy motorists have just chucked rubbish from their vehicles. The campaigner said motorways are the "worst offenders" of littering with people throwing litter out of their car windows.
John, 60, filmed footage at one of the worst affected areas in the UK - the M58/M6 interchange in Lancashire. Photos show a river of litter on the side of the hard shoulder.
John said: "We have an enforcement system that is fractured, agencies like National Highways are responsible for keeping our roads safe and clean but they are failing. I drive up and down the UK and there is litter everywhere, every single motorway is disgusting it is covered in litter.
"The problem is that National Highways should not have to be litter picking but due to the litter being there it is their responsibility to clean it."
John has shared images from the A12 - connecting London and the coastal town to Lowestoft - and the M58 where you can see a "tsunami of litter".
John said: "When it comes to litter and fly-tipping it is anarchy, there is no law enforcement in this country. The UK is the wild west, the penalties are ridiculously low which reflects on how our politicians are spineless.
"We need to see fines increase to £1000 for littering, we need to show some guts but that is lacking in the Government. I drive all over the country, it is a sh*t hole, we are heading towards a third-world country."
He said penalties for littering are "ridiculously low" and said the government is failing. John said: "There are more than 17 million people who admit to littering in Britain which is why the country is so filthy.
"We have a lot of antisocial, ignorant and selfish people in this country. I drive all around the country, it is a s*ithole, the government is failing completely.
"Britain is continuing to degenerate into a tsunami of litter."
An average street fine in the UK is between £65 and £100 but John is calling for tougher enforcement after 60,000 people signed his petition for littering fines to be increased.
